Freesat Product Feature

Freesat Product Feature - ux

Working for Edge UX, I was brought in to develop a new product feature for Freesat. Freesat is a UK TV service where viewers can access loads of digital channels, record TV and use the mobile application. The product team submitted a brief for developing a new product for their TV service to link with the mobile app.

1. User PROFILES

The first stage was to investigate the current Freesat service and get to know the product inside-out; how the UI currently works, how the user journey and user profiles work. I needed to work out how the new feature brief would fit in to the service and alongside the brand guidelines. There was already some research and design work done on this and so we were able to build on the user feedback from some initial testing with Freesat customers.

I then began looking at user journeys. Not specific user profiles but more vague, rounded understanding of how users flow through the proposed feature. We wanted to find the ‘Golden Journey’ and raise the questions that came from this exploration. Using sketches and omnigraffle, I created quick flows that outlined some choices the user could make and where they go, how they interact and how the feature would work alongside a usable UI.

2. The Golden Journey

After reviewing with the product team, we were able to discuss the questions (the green quotation boxes on the user journey map). Together we worked out the next steps of the product. We wanted to look delve into the possibility of the perfect journey that would please all user profiles. Something that would be simple to use, well understood with ease and would be a likeable additional feature to the service. I used sketch and worked mainly with the existing UI adding features in the same style.

3. Review and Refine

We then went on to define the user journey, now able to work out the best journey and UI on the research we had undertaken. I went about designing more detailed screens in Sketch and creating quick prototypes.

The best way to get feedback was to have a high level design ready so that the product team could review and imagine what it would look / act like if it were developed into the current app and TV service.

The product team were able to then present this to the stake holders at Freesat and talk them through the product with some conviction as to why this would work. The TV and mobile journeys were separated out and thought through any issues that arose from this exploration.

Thank you so much for all your work on Freesat TV (and for being such a great addition to the team). Mapping out the various journeys and scenarios, plus all the other discussions we’ve had along the way, has been invaluable in bringing clarity to our thinking and direction to the concepts. I think we’ve got it all to a really good place, and I know I’m feeling pretty positive about moving these features on towards actual development. Very much hope our paths cross again sometime in the future
