Workshops for understanding

Alongside commercial managers in the initial research phase, we analysed device constraints and uses in a series of workshops designed to understand the technology and how they are installed as well as interacting within an app journey. These then created a comprehensive list of user stories which we could measure the design against.

Draft wireframes for feedback

I was then able to create a draft user journey and wireframes which we then reviewed with the wider development and commercial teams. I like to display the wireframes together and create questions and depth in the solution.

Prototype

Once everyone was happy with the wireframes and consensus was reached that we were fulfilling the user and business requirements previously outlined, then I built a prototype and testing journey. The testing was to focus on new customers and those more familiar with the Neos SmartHome app. It covered unboxing to installation of 3 devices and then questions of settings and how the user would interact in the app and use the devices in their home.

USER TESTING:
Tests: 5 user interviews observing and taking notes.
Testing journey: 30-40 minutes interviews of connecting devices with physically printed instructions and digital prototype using inVision mobile app and 3D printed devices.
Incentive: £25 amazon vouchers each.

Playback from user testing

After testing with the users, I was able to playback the sessions to the wider product team. Each user interviewee has a different colour post-it note and the notes were stuck to the relevant screens. This was then easy to see where any problems were highlighted in the journeys.

new user journey

I was then able to finalise the user journey and tweak the designs to reflect the changes to enable the user journey to be as smooth as possible. It then went into development and further Alpha and Beta testing, the results are below.

Beta Results

Overall, the Beta testing survey was really positive, so I knew it was a success and we were now happy for release. Phew!

  • 3rd party sellers (American Family) acquiring bulk units (white-labelled product)

Marketing videos for the devices

The marketing team at Neos worked with a production company to create some great videos to explain uses for the devices. Very cute!
